There is always so much to be grateful for, right? Well, that’s what I’m told anyway. This year I’m grateful for music…and my record collection. I won’t bore you with all the reasons why. After all, you’re already familiar with them
Yesterday, Thanksgiving Day 2023, I decided to express my gratitude with a vinyl set. After the turkey and gravy stopped burning a hole in my guts, I wobbled over to a stack of my 45s and put together this little ditty. I didn’t really have a theme in mind, other than being grateful for music, I guess.
The tryptophan pulled me toward a Neo Soul groove that evolved into Free Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop, and even dropped some acid at Woodstock. This set starts in the early 2020s but quickly travelled through every decade from the 1950s to the present.
Tarheel Slim, the Carolina blues legend, clocks in as the oldest recording in the set, while a number of current Colemine Records employees (Lizzie No, Dojo Cuts, Durand Jones, Say She She, to name a few) pepper us with contemporary soulful frequencies throughout. In the end, this set came together quite nicely, making for a very pleasant Thanksgiving treat.
And for that, I am very grateful.
